Obscura

A Thesis Film.

Developed during my final year at UC Santa Barbara, this short film became both a technical and emotional study in visual storytelling, combining my interests in psychology and human frailty into a single haunting image: a forensic photographer finding his final photo as he approaches his own death.

Obscura, shot through the lens of noir and psychological realism, explores how obsession with the past can distort the present, using the cinematic scape to mirror the fragmentation of memory itself.

By using Herm Barber, my protagonist, as the catalyst for discussion, I aimed to take a more existential look at the noir genre. While the short hits on noir, the aim in a longer version is Tarkovsky with a taste of Fincher, hitting closer to an existential fear rather than suspenseful plot.
